It's a...

As I mentioned in my post (here) yesterday I wanted to find out the gender of our 2nd baby at the 20 week ultrasound. We found out at the 20 wk with our first too. Only, with our first we found out in the ultrasound room. Boring. So, we wanted to do something a bit different for baby #2.

You see, this  isn't just any box. Nope, this box contains the gender of the baby...only we had no idea what was inside.

Huh?
When we went in for the ultrasound we had the tech put the gender in an envelope. We then promptly went to The Children's Place to purchase an outfit for the new baby...we gave the envelope to the clerk along with a little boy outfit and a little girl outfit. We wandered around the store a bit more while the clerk looked in the envelope and put the outfit that fit the baby's gender in the box and hid the other one behind the counter. The trick was finding 2 outfits that were exactly the same price (I'm a snooper and would have looked at the receipt to see the total). So, the only person that knew what we were having at that point was the ultrasound tech, the store clerk (and me...only because I already "knew.")

We then arranged a date night and dropped our 1 1/2 year old off at his grandparent's house. Of course we brought the box with us. Somehow we managed to make it through out entire meal without opening the box. And as we were waiting for dessert we opened it.

I loved finding out this way. It was romantic and such a special moment that just the 2 of us got to share. We felt like we had our own little secret.

After we left, we dashed back to the Children's Place and got our 1 1/2 year old a matching outfit "from his brother."

How did you find out the gender of your children? If you waited until the day of birth, how did you get past the 20 wk ultrasound without caving?

  1. Definitely found out at the ultrasound! I "knew" it was a girl but we needed the confirmation. When we got in the room, the tech asked if we wanted to know the gender and we said yes. He put the probe down and literally, in one second, said "It's a girl". No build up, no drumroll, just, "It's a girl." Don't get me wrong, he was an awesome tech and wasn't boring, but we were surprised by his quickness and "here you go" kind of answer.

I love the way you guys found out with your second. So sweet!

  3. First of all, thanks so much for following my blog! I've followed here too! Second, I'm pretty sure I am going to have to steal this brilliant idea for child #2 (still to be planned). You are quite the clever one, aren't you!??

We just did the usual find out at the ultrasound. I was too impatient, but secretly liked that idea of having it on a card and doing something special. We shall see....next time, for the child is in the WAAAYYY future :)

  4. What a totally fun idea ... IF you are insistent on finding out.

I'm old fashioned (maybe because I'm just "old"). But ... I had 10 babies and NEVER found out ahead of time. Nope. Told the doctors that we didn't want to know. Insisted that the docs had to keep it a secret (even when we were having twins).

Never had ANY desire to know ahead of time. LOVED the surprise factor.
