Kid Books

I love kid books. A new tradition I've started is instead of buying a card for a baby shower, I now spend the money on a great book. If you think about it, a $5 card could buy a really cute board book. And what a great way to help begin or grow a book collection! My current favorite, granted it's usually more than $5, is

On the Night You Were Born by Nancy Tillman

"On the night you were born,
the moon smiled with such wonder
that the stars peeked in to see you
and the night wind whispered,
life will never be the same.
Because there had never been anyone like you...
ever in the world."

...

"Heaven blew every trumpet
and played every horn
on the wonderful, marvelous
night you were born."

What books do you LOVE in your collection? If you were to recommend ONE book to another mom (or parent) to have in their book collection, what would you recommend?

  1. I love that you buy a book - I do the same thing. I almost always buy Brown Bear Brown Bear, by Eric Carle. It's got something for every age - colors, animals, you can count the animals at the back, and the repetition in the book makes it a favorite. Georgia could read it over and over and over...
Thanks for stopping by my blog! Yours is really great - I'll be stopping by again soon!

  2. ME TOO! And usually as birthday gifts too. you can never have too many children's books! My favorite for 4-7year old kids is Mo Willems books, especially the Elephant and Piggy books. He has a website your kids might find fun: http://www.mowillems.com/
For baby showers I love to give Sandra Boynton books. Especially Snuggle Puppy!
I try to buy my gift books from TjMaxx since they usually have a good selection for a discounted price. Or I stock up on my favorites from a scholastic book order when they are cheap. I'm excited to see what others have to say, I might discover some new favorites!

  3. Meghan--so great to hear from you! Wow, what great books! I hadn't even heard of the Elephant and Piggy books (mentally adding that to the kids Christmas list!). I usually stock up on some during book orders too...great prices. But when I can't I use my parent's discount at barnes & noble ;) I didn't even think of TJMaxx.

cooper1788--I love Brown Bear Brown Bear

Some of my other favs are: Jamberry by Bruce Degen, Kiss Good Night by Amy Hest, and Little Mouse Red Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear by Audrey and Don Wood.

  4. I usually buy people Jamberry! Oh! I just saw that you listed that. It is hands down, one of Andrew and Levi's favorite books. They also both love Blueberries for Sal and Make Way for Ducklings (though they are both kind of long!). Classics, but they love them!

  5. we love Jamberry as well! Although these are older books, we do love the Llama Llama books. We also like "Click, Clack, Moo" by Dorothy Cronin, as well as most anything by Mo Willems.

  6. Our boys have loved Goodnight, Gorilla and the Sandra Boynton books. Simon loves David Shannon's "David" books (and memorizes them like crazy!). When I read Simon The Little Mouse/Strawberry/Bear, on the page that says, "Little mouse, what are you doing?" He always says, "Workin'". My favorites are always my favorites because of the things they boys say while we read them. :)
